I got an exhilarating noon time call at work today from the top of Mount Katahdin. They have arrived. They got into Katahdin Springs Campground on Wednesday and took a zero day Thursday; Madeline had some bad blisters and needed to give it a rest. They began their climb at 7:30 this morning under Class II weather conditions. The rest of the hikers they have been traveling with through this last stretch did the climb yesterday, so they were climbing alone. It was reported to be a pretty hard climb; about a mile of it is rock climbing, not hiking. The ascent is steep. Up top it was cold enough for the plant life to be icy, but not bitter. It was cloudy, so there was no visability, but exhilarating just the same. Spirits were running high. Once back down, they will take a shuttle to a hostel in Millinocket where they will stay for the night. Madeline will need to make her decision final at that point.....to go on or head home.
Madeline's lost money pouch was reported to be found at White House Landing. They received a phone call from the owners who will be mailing it home to Cincinnati. She is pleased to know the arrowhead will again be in her possession. Should she choose to continue, I will mail it on to the next drop. I wait with bated breath. ~ Amy
