After an afternoon and night in a motel in Bangor, ME, Jonathan saw Madeline board a Greyhound at 6:30 this morning to begin her 32 hour ride home. Despite maternal concerns, Jonathan was determined to hitch hike back to Monson, ME to begin his trek south. He assured me there is no crime in Maine. By mid afternoon, he had arrived. Although it took several hours to catch the first ride, the subsequent three came quickly and with that he was in Monson. The kindness of a construction worker, a white collar worker, a retired gentleman, and a lady got him there. I told him it must have been a brave lady; he said it was a big lady.
He picked up his Monson mail drop which was built for two, but which he felt he would be able to manage eating most of, and their tent which had been left at the hostel in Monson to lighten the load. Though cloudy, the afternoon was a pleasant 60 degrees as he headed back to the trail. He felt good and was looking forward to be walking again. It seems he is built for this life. To follow one will be a different sort of journey, but one I shall also eagerly anticipate news of and faithfully continue to share. It is exactly three months to the day since they began their journey together. ~ Amy
